What will you learn

Year 12 and 13

CTEC L3 Business intent

In year 12 and 13 we have chosen to deliver the Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma in Business, which has allowed learning to be planned in order to support students directly with the dynamic world of business. This curriculum is tailored to provide learners with a deep understanding of how businesses operate in a real-world context, thereby equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in a professional setting. The emphasis of this curriculum is on a context-driven approach that delves into an exploration of businesses at local, national, and international levels, while integrating real-life business experiences. This ensures that students not only develop strong analytical and evaluative skills pertinent across various disciplines but also gain hands-on, practical knowledge, such as understanding the impact of economic factors like interest rates on businesses and consumers.

Our curriculum is sequenced to ensure key business areas such as marketing, finance, operations, and human resources are embedded so they can then apply these concepts to real-life business situations and professionals. By integrating current events, practical case studies, and hands-on activities, the curriculum not only keeps pace with the ever-evolving nature of the business world but also ensures that students are consistently engaged in practical problem-solving.

How you are assessed and how we help you improve your work

Assessment and Feedback:

Students will be given a clear assessment checklist and will be required to meet a demanding schedule for the submission of the coursework. Coursework will be assessed continuously with feedback given to the student about their current grade. All tasks must be completed to the required standard to achieve distinction.

Marking and feedback that informs planning and addresses misconceptions promptly. Variation to develop deep and holistic understanding. High levels of expertise students can feel confident to use a range of digital applications and techniques to develop their knowledge and understanding. Regular use of teacher, technician and student led live modelling to demonstrate processes and applications both practically and theory based.

Retrieval opportunities are interleaved in every lesson with careful consideration to optimise long term memory storage and recall.

Adaptive Teaching:

The MUTC teaching and learning framework lies at the heart of what we do. Lessons are carefully planned and sequenced to ensure students avoid cognitive overload.  The subject is brought to life with application questions alongside links to careers, in line with the MUTC Charter. This includes visiting speakers who share their expertise and careers events where students can network with employers. Students will be encouraged to find work placements and opportunities with local employers in businesses large and small.
